Meet the Faces Behind HYPOBATT

At HYPOBATT, our mission is to advance marine transportation through cutting-edge, sustainable solutions. Central to our efforts are the dedicated individuals who drive our projects forward with their expertise and vision. Today, we are excited to introduce you to Alessandro Maccari, a key figure in the HYPOBATT project and the Research and Development Director at RINA.

Alessandro Maccari: Shaping the Future of Maritime Sustainability

Alessandro background in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, combined with his role at RINA, positions him as a pivotal player in the HYPOBATT project. As a Research and Development Director, Alessandro is deeply involved in shaping the use cases, specifications, and requirements that guide the development of sustainable marine technologies.

Aligning with Government Initiatives and Regulations

When asked how the HYPOBATT project aligns with government initiatives and regulations related to maritime sustainability, he highlights the significant boost provided by the EU Green Deal and the IMO's strategies for GHG emission reduction. "These initiatives have accelerated the development and use of alternative zero carbon and sustainable fuels, alongside solutions based on ship electrification and energy storage in batteries for marine applications," he explains. Alessandro emphasizes the importance of balancing emissions reduction and energy consumption with design and operational requirements, considering factors such as cost, weight, maintenance, flexibility, and safety.

Role of Government Agencies in Supporting HYPOBATT

Alessandro envisions a crucial role for government agencies in supporting and promoting projects like HYPOBATT. "National flag administrations are responsible for approving the safety of installations on board, supported by Recognized Organizations (ROs) like Classification Societies, which provide third-party verification through conformity assessments," he states. These bodies ensure that testing laboratories meet regulatory standards, facilitating a smoother approval process when aligned with harmonized regulatory frameworks and standards.

Contributing to Broader Policy Objectives

Looking ahead, Alessandro anticipates that the outcomes of HYPOBATT will significantly contribute to broader policy objectives in the maritime sector. "One of HYPOBATT's key goals is to facilitate the approval process by defining the functional verification of compliance for the battery charging system and its integration," he notes. HYPOBATT aims to propose new regulatory recommendations based on lessons learned from the project's verification activities. These recommendations will inform regulatory bodies on interpretations and explanatory notes of current regulations, necessary upgrades, guidelines for design, approval, survey and testing, as well as instructions for life-cycle operations and maintenance.

He also underscores the importance of developing standards for fast recharging of high-power systems and addressing risk mitigation measures and procedures for the normal operation of battery charging systems. "Reporting of accidents, warnings, alarms, and faults, along with root cause analysis and corrective measures, will assist Port Authorities and Administrations in their duties," he adds.

A Visionary in Maritime Innovation

Alessandro insights and leadership reflect the ingenuity and dedication that have propelled the HYPOBATT project to the forefront of maritime innovation. With the unwavering support of RINA, HYPOBATT is not only advancing industry standards but also exemplifying the power of collaborative engineering excellence.

As Alessandro and the HYPOBATT team continue to push the boundaries of maritime technology, they invite stakeholders to join them on a journey towards a more sustainable and efficient future for marine transportation. Together, they are reshaping the seascape of tomorrow, one innovation at a time.

Follow us as we introduce more faces behind HYPOBATT and share the stories of those driving positive change in the maritime industry. Together, we can make a difference.
